Great Restaurant Even For Thai Food Haters
DESCRIPTION: I've been to one after another and felt the food was overspiced, dried out, boring or odd. This place was a surprise. We've been there twice and I ask for Pad Thai without salt or soy sauce added. It still came out tasty with gernerous meat and egg ingredients, the noodles smooth and deliciously flavored. The service is splendid with the waiter acting as if he'd suffer if we didn't love the food. He had nothing to worry about.

Fine Dining
DESCRIPTION: Owner Yono Pournomo is what every fine dining restaurant owner should strive for. Not only does he consistently deliver fantastic and diverse entrees, but he is a friend to both the nubies and regulars. His son joined him recently as the somalier helping anyone with smart selections. One of the things I enjoy here is eating a special featuring something that could eat me (bear, shark, alligator, etc...) For the less adventurous there are standards, but you can get that at home anytime. Live it up. Yono's recent move to the Armory Center left some fans longing for the olde Brownstone in downtown Albany, but they have certainly set themselves up in an interesting environment.

An Indonesian feast that won't dent your wallet
DESCRIPTION: This little gem in Hell's kitchen is perfect if you love East Asian food on a budget. The food is delicious, the waiters smile a lot and the portions are enormous. Though similar in appearance to the more popular Thai and vietnamese cuisines, Indonesian curries have a distinct flavor of their own. If like me, you have a fried rice fixation, I reccomend the Nasi Goreng which comes with succelent shrimp and chicken and deeply flavored chicken satay on a skewer, dabbed with peanut sauce. The dinner special which includes a free glass of wine, beer, a soft drink and dessert, as well as a sampling of several favorites is a bargain at $15 (veg) and $17 (non-veg). The roti kanai, more malaysian that inonesian is my new favorite here only because the cury is so much more delicious than the ones you get at Malayasian places.You can actually have a meal for 2 under $25 in New York and it's worth every penny.

The only Indonesian food in town
DESCRIPTION: I stayed 6 years in Ames and during my first two years I frequented Bali Satay for almost everyday. They were a small scale restaurant next to the burger king (now quizno's). Hard work and good customer relations (the owner knew everyone by his/her first name) paid off, and now they are a big one. The food used to spicier than they are now. But if Thai Kitchen was not there Bali Satay would be deinately the best oriental restaurant in town. The interior decoration is becoming better and beetter every year. In adition to the restaurant, now they have a full scale bar too. All said, the food is great; and they'll make it according to your spice reception level. The price has become a little expensive for the student community, but it's worth spending.

DESCRIPTION: Indonesian Garden is hidden in a strip mall in San Gabriel. It's got about as much atmosphere as a second-rate video rental store, but the food is good. Go with a group so you can try a variety of dishes - recommended are the gado-gado (a sort of Indonesian cooked-vegetable salad with peanut sauce) and the rendang (beef cooked in spicy coconut milk). Portions are a little small. The strange drinks are probably the best thing about this restaurant - they're often brightly-colored, with fruit or gelatinous blobs or other edibles mixed in. You won't find these elsewhere, so muster up your courage and try them - you'll be glad you did.
